Does a prepaid SIM come with a phone number

Pre paid cards do come with their own phone number. We will provide you with this number after your SIM has been successfully activated. Remember that if you want someone to contact you on your mobile phone when using your pre paid SIM you will need to give them the pre paid card phone number.

Data rollover

We do not offer data rollover services. This is not necessary with our pre paid cards as they have unlimited data included.

What is the difference between PAYG and a pre paid SIM

A PAYG SIM allows you to top up data as and when you need it. If you run out of data, you can top it up again with an amount that suits you. Whereas, a pre paid SIM card gives you a set amount of data that you can use for a given period before the SIM cuts off. You do not have to top up a pre paid card.

How do I install a prepaid SIM card

First, you need to figure out what size SIM card you need depending on your device. A portable WiFi device might need a different sized SIM card compared to mobile phones.

Once you know what size you need, simply push out the correct SIM size from the 3 in 1 card provided. Insert your SIM card into your device SIM slot and you’re ready to go!

Tip: You might want to restart your device once you’ve inserted the new SIM card to help it register the SIM card has been installed.

Can you have a SIM card without a mobile plan

Yes, buying pre paid SIM cards enables you to have SIM cards without monthly plans. There are no contracts to sign or minimum length requirements. You can simply get 30 days of data and calls with no ties attached!

The end is near for ISDN and PSTN: Have you made the switch?

The gradual deactivation of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) systems is getting ever closer to the final switch off.

In 2020, BT announced they were no longer accepting new orders of these circuits or carrying out any upgrades to existing networks. This kicked off their five year phase-out working towards the long-term goal of completely switching off ISDN and PSTN by 2025.

Now, there are only three years left before the total switch off. If your business is reliant on ISDN and hasn’t already migrated to an alternative solution, you need to get thinking fast!

But don’t panic, here is all the information you need to make the swap.

What is ISDN & PSTN?

ISDN allows you to make phone calls and video calls through digital transmission using PSTN. 

When it was first launched, ISDN was the fastest service available and considered the highest standard of digital connections. Many businesses and organizations used ISDN service for both Internet access and network connections between locations in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

However, over the years as alternative technology has advanced, ISDN has become increasingly outdated.


Why is the ISDN switch off happening?

Put simply, these networks are no longer a viable option for BT. The outdated systems are draining vast money and time but don’t offer anything in return. Connectivity has advanced to such an extent that traditional ISDN and PSTN circuits are no match for modern alternative solutions that are becoming more and more popular each day.

When there are faster, more agile and less costly systems available why would you want to stick to traditional phone lines?


What are the alternatives?

The top alternatives for business requirements are the IP technology based solutions: VoIP and SIP.

The session initiation protocol (SIP),  forms the foundation of all types of internet communication sessions. It establishes sessions, manages signalling, and terminates the connection when the sessions end. It’s mostly used for making phone calls over the internet but it can also be used for video conference calls and instant messaging.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solutions are cloud based systems and are used to enable voice calls and messages over LANs or the internet, rather than traditional analogue lines.

How fast does my internet need to be?

Whether it’s for your home or for your business, getting an internet connection fast enough for your demands can save you a lot of headaches. So, exactly how fast is fast enough?

Well, there’s a few important things to keep in mind.

Testing your connection speed

If you’re thinking about whether or not your internet is fast enough, you might want to get some hard numbers, and work out how much faster you need your connection to be. Fortunately, testing your connection is easier than you might be think.

Lots of online tools such as Ookla’s speedtest.net and fast.com from Netflix have been set up to make it as quick and easy as possible- simply searching “internet speed test” gets many options!

How fast does it need to be?

There are several things to consider when figuring out how fast you need your connection to be. A speed of 25Mbps is generally accepted as a basic internet speed, so that might be a good starting point to consider for a connection at home.

Think about what you need your connection for. To stream on a single device in high definition, you’ll need a speed of above 5Mbps or above. For 4k streaming, you’ll need a speed of 25Mbps at the very least, and you may want a lot more than these if you want to stream on several devices at once.

There are several bandwidth calculators online that you can use to get an approximate figure for how much you need given your location and from other factors. Be careful to avoid ones from an ISP service provider, so that you can get unbiased results!

How many devices?

While 25Mbps may be excellent for one or two people at home, you will have more strain on your network the more devices that are connected to it. To understand how much bandwidth you will need, you will have to consider how many users you will have on your network and what they will all be using it for.

Local businesses with a few employees filesharing won’t need nearly as much speed as an inn that’s providing WiFi to all their clients, or an enormous office with dozens of employees. The latter of which could need an FTTP connection of up to 1Gbps!

How is 5G Different?

5G is meant to be faster than the 4G network, but is that the only difference? Today we’re looking at some of the ways that 5G is different, and what this could mean for the future.

Higher Speed, Lower Latency

5G is much faster than 4G. Some 5G networks in the UK have been peaking at download speeds of over 750Mbps!

The 5G spectrum also has much greater capacity than 4G did, which means that far more devices can be connected at the same time. This high capacity means that 5G is a lot more reliable than 4G ever was, especially in busier areas.

Latency in a 5G network- how long a network takes to respond to a request- is also significantly better than 4G. Recorded latencies have been as low as 17 milliseconds in central London, meaning that high download speeds won’t be ruined by slow networks!

Smaller Cells

Similar to previous generations, 5G mobile masts transmit radio frequency and data to 5G hubs. This gives you a connection which you can use to transmit data to the internet, using the masts as a relay.

5G operates at a much higher frequency than 3G or 4G. Because these high frequencies don’t travel as far, 5G requires lots of small cells to fill the gaps in-between the masts.

This extra infrastructure is one of the reasons why 5G’s launch has been staggered outside of densely populated areas. However, it excels in these populated areas, and 5G could be used to provide strong connections to people on public transport, or during events in crowded stadiums!

It Has Exciting Potential

5G’s new capabilities have inspired some new discussions about where other technologies can go. With a fast enough connection allowing for communication between vehicles, 5G may be instrumental in developing safe self-driving cars, and similarly improve drone and VR technology.

The improved speed and reliability also means 5G could be excellent for working remotely. This won’t just include working from home either. Remote vehicles are just the beginning- it could lead to an increase in telesurgery- surgeons operating remotely through connected robots!

How can I improve my WiFi speed?

How frustrating is it to watch a webpage struggle to load? Or to wait for your video to stop buffering? If you’re wondering how to improve your WiFi speed, we’re here to help and explain what you can do about it. 

Improve the Location of Your Router

Router placement matters, because WiFi signals have a limited range. Simply moving your device or router closer to each other can make a difference in your connection speed. Don’t hide your router behind doors, walls and cupboards, as this will make your connection worse. Many other building materials can block WiFi signals, especially metal.

You should also watch out for devices with similar wireless bands to your router. These days a lot of devices operate on a 2.4GHz band frequency, so if your router is near one, the signal may struggle when these other devices are in use. More modern routers can operate on a 5GHz frequency, which should also help improve your connection quality.

Microwaves are notorious for interfering with WiFi signals. Keep your router away from microwaves, to avoid your connection slowing whenever someone decides to reheat their leftovers. 

Switch off and reboot the router

The IT Crowd wasn’t wrong! Turning it off and on again can actually work. Rebooting a router clears out the device’s cache (short term memory) so it can run smoothly again. Resetting your router is sometimes just the simple fix your router needs.

Waiting ten seconds after turning off before rebooting your router is a good idea. That gives it time to completely drain every capacitor and fully reset, before you start using it again. 

Check your router hasn’t overheated

Overheating can cause your router to crash, and there are a few reasons it might start overheating. If your router is hot when you go to investigate it, then there are some things you should do to keep it cooler. 

The first step is to ensure the vents aren’t covered up.

You may also want to ensure that dust has not built up in the vents. To clean your routers’ vents, use compressed air to remove dust. This can prevent further overheating. 

Check your VPN

If you use a VPN, that could contributing to the problem. Because of the type of encryption used by VPNs and the distance between your location and the server, an active VPN can slow down your internet connection. 

If the problem is fixed by disabling your VPN, then adjusting your VPN settings might help improve your internet connection in the long term. The exact distance between a VPN server and your device can vary, and servers located closer to your physical location may have more manageable speeds for you.
