Using fixed IP SIM cards in conjunction with a 4G router is a great way to provide high speed mobile broadband with a fixed, public IP address. We can help you connect directly to your 4G router from anywhere!
What is a fixed IP?
An IP address is a number assigned by your internet provider to identify your computer or 4G mobile device when it’s online. It works similarly to a home address or a phone number: when you use the internet, the network uses your IP address so it knows where to send data to.
A fixed IP address is an IP address that is static – it never changes. Not everyone needs a fixed IP but knowing how they differ from dynamic IP addresses can help you understand whether you should use a static IP address or not.
Fixed IP addresses are assigned manually by an administrator. In other words, the device receiving the fixed IP is given a very specific private IP address and from then on the address will never change.
In an opposite method, dynamic IP addresses are assigned not manually but automatically, by DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Most people aren’t worried if their IP address changes. However, not everyone can get by with a dynamic IP.
Why might you need a fixed IP?
1. You need remote access to your devices
Static IP addresses are necessary for devices that need constant internet access. If you want to ensure that people can always access their devices when at home, from work or when travelling, then you need an IP address which doesn’t change.
For example, if you have a printer that everyone in your office shares, it would have a static IP address. This means, devices would only connect devices to the printer once and would remain connected indefinitely.
2. You want to use port forwarding
Fixed IP’s are essential for port forwarding. This is where you configure your router to proactively identify and redirect signals to follow specific electronic paths. This helps to speed up the internet as the 4G router directs the signal to specific ports that will allow it through, rather than stopping at every port until a suitable one is found.
This is where assigning a fixed IP address comes into play. A static address must be set on each network device you are assigning a port forwarding rule to so that the rules work around the clock, 100% of the time.
3. You want to install CCTV cameras
When it comes to a security camera or confidentiality of online resources, you need a private, fixed address. This is because a fixed IP is necessary for remote management and online security.
Since you’re the only individual who knows the IP address, it’s nearly impossible for anyone else to get access. This means you’ll have no unwanted prying eyes trying to look at your security footage. You can also customize the service according to your security needs.
4. Enjoy less downtime
Whenever a dynamic IP refreshes, you run the risk of downtime. It’s usually for a very short time, but if you’re relying on a stable internet connection this can be frustrating all the same.
What is a 4G fixed IP SIM card?
A 4G Fixed IP SIM card is a data SIM that comes with a fixed IP address for use with your 4G Router to provide a convenient and reliable 3G or 4G internet connection. We have fixed IP SIMs available on a contract basis from all the major carriers.
You can insert a 4G fixed IP SIM card into a 3G or 4G router and remotely connect to the router using the IP address attached to the SIM. Using fixed IP SIM Cards with a 4G broadband router is a very common way of providing an internet connection for M2M remote monitoring and management applications.
If you need a quick and convenient way to get a private IP address, then fixed IP SIM cards are a great option to go for.
However, this added bonus does come at a price. The downside of a 4G fixed IP SIM card is the heavy outgoing costs they bring with them per month.
Fortunately, we also offer a cost-effective fixed IP solution for businesses who need to supply connectivity to remote sites but don’t want to pay the expensive monthly bill.
The alternative fixed IP solution
You can buy our SimRush Go+ plug and play device and add-on a static IP address to the hardware. The SimRush Go+ is a wireless access point with built in CAT6 modem for 4G LTE connectivity. The device is weatherproof so it can be externally mounted or simply placed on a desk if preferred.
A SimRush public IP address comes from the FreeClix data centre based in the UK. This address is presented directly to the SimRush Go+ so it is independent of the external links to the internet that the device will have utilised to reach the public internet.
The SimRush public IP address service we provide is carrier agnostic which means it re-establishes itself over any connection, remaining a constant fixed public IP address that can be reached from anywhere in the world.
All you need to do is insert any SIM card into the SimRush Go+, plug in the device and your assigned IP address will be up and running.
The fixed IP is payed for on an annual basis and the hardware charge is a one-off fee. Although you don’t have to pay these fees when you get a fixed IP SIM card, the savings you make on the monthly costs outweigh this outright charge by a mile!
This option also gives you the chance to have a much higher data allowance at a fraction of the price of a fixed IP SIM. We offer low cost unlimited data SIMs from all the main carriers. And if you don’t need an unlimited data SIM, you can simply pick any tariff from our range that suits your data usage!
Choose what’s right for your business.
Our SimRush hardware and fixed IP solution is perfect for CCTV businesses who don’t provide fixed IP SIM cards or want to pay the monthly fees associated with them.
